Adoption - Adoption is not something to take lightly. Unlike other shops, the Electronic Pet Shop encourages people to think about and care for their new pet. Adoption is voluntary acceptance of a child or creature of other parents/owners to be the same as one's own child/creature. A pet which is adopted cannot be tossed aside at the first sign of naughtiness or when the owner becomes bored. Adopting a pet is a very serious decision and can take a lot of thinking about. If you need some help considering your options, contact us.

Adoption Package - Every pet comes with a free Adoption Package, and this is optional so you can choose whether to have one or not. At the bottom of every pet's page, you will find boxes to fill in to personalise the pet's adoption package for a loved one or yourself! For more information on the adoption package click here

Alien - Aliens are generally quite difficult to come by. An alien can be best defined by a person/creature from another and very different family, people, or place. That is that they are different from the normal expected. Electronic aliens such as iPal, are also quite difficult to come by but can sometimes be found in the Side Alley.

Articulated Movement - To be united by or provided with articulations. This means that it is jointed with hinges and/or joints possibly including ball and socket. Toys with artificial limbs usually incorporate articulated movement so that they can move in a way that resembles humans.

Audio - Audio is a term used in sound recording and reproduction. As opposed to sound, audio is a stream of frequencies that are recorded, reproduced and then played back through some kind of newfangled technology such as i-Dog.

B

Battery - Battery (electricity) is an array of electrochemical cells for electricity storage. They come in all different sizes ranging from small button cell batteries all the way up to the world's biggest battery in Alaska. The world's biggest battery was 2,000 square meters and 1,300 tonnes and is used in case of a black out in Fairbanks, a city in Alaska. Generally, batteries this size aren't used for Electronic Pets and the most common are 1.5V AA or AAA.

Boogie - An earthy and strongly rhythmic rock music conducive to dancing. Also meaning in slang, the act of dancing or boggying to music.

Bow-Wow Speakers - The Bow-Wow doggy speakers by the Novelty Gift Company are very stylish, high quality speakers that come in two different styles. Their BowWow hand stiched appearence means that they look like designer speakers at a very low cost. They love listening to your tunes and will plug into any of you music devices including your iPod and computer headphone port. The multi-directional speaker sound quality is excellent and will leave you bow wowing for more. The little doggies are very easy to look after and have their own removable collars. Designer Pooches without the pet bills and two for the price of one! They are avaliable in pink and Black and White and can sometimes be found in the Dog Pound.

C

Calpis - Calpis is a Japanese uncarbonated soft drink pronounced 'Cal Pico'. It is manufactured by Calpis Co. Ltd. (Karupisu Kabushiki-gaisha) headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo. [Back to Top]

Charge - Charge is defined as the amount of electric charge contained in an object, particle, or region of space. Batteries can store a charge and are used in Electronic Pets to make them work. Some toys like Gupi use a power cable to charge them.

Charity - Charity is a provision of help or relief to creatures or people that are poor in one way or another. It is something that gives to the needy, this can be an institution, organization, or fund. There are many different charities in the world and sometimes choosing a certain 'needy' is very difficult. See also Polar Bears International, RSPB, WWF

Communicate - To transfer information or a message between two. In human form, the sender may communicate to the receiver via verbal communication such as speech or nonverbally such as body language. In electronic animals communication is usually done via Infrared. This allows a message to be sent between two animals. Electronic Pets therefore, find it very difficult to communicate via telephone.

Cuddleactive™ - Have you ever allowed your five your old to trademark something for you? Probably not, as it costs thousands of pounds to trademark anything and should only be done with phrases that people are likely to steal. Senario, the makers of Scoozie, are no beginners to trademarking, "Cuddleactive™" technology is a term to describe the technology used in Scoozie. Other trademarked phrases by Senario include, "Colorfur™", "Scoozie! He's everywhere, where are you?™" and "Pawtograph™"

D

Dance - Dancing is to move rhythmically usually to music, singing or just noise. Many people find it difficult to dance, but most Electronic Pets find it very easy.

Doo-Ay - A Furbish word spoken by Furbys to mean 'fun.'

E

Electronic Pet - To qualify as an Electronic Pet the animal has to be both electronic in some way and also shaped like the animal. The electronics inside the pet can simply consist of a sound chip so that the toy makes noises, such as the RSPB Bird Plush, or a complex design of one or more sensors meaning that the pet is interactive and can respond to its owner, such as Funky Furby. A Tamagotchi is sometimes recognised as an electronic pet but for the purpose of this definition is infact just an interactive pet because it is not shaped like an animal in all dimensions. To qualify as an electronic pet at the Electronic Pet Shop, with exception to creatures in the Side Alley, all animals must look similar, or have similar characteristics, to the animal they are meant to be. Although electronic pets contain electronic parts, they are usually safer than normal pets and can help people understand how to care for them.

F

Flip Flap - Flip Flap is a solar powered flapping plant that was a hit in the offices and apartments of Japan. With such a busy lifestyle and small living space this plant fitted perfectly into their lives. There may be a day where real plants can take care of themselves. Move themselves into the light in the morning, water themselves, perhaps even get some chocolate biscuits when they get hungry. Until then, Flip-Flap is the nearest and bestest. Flip-Flap only needs light to survive and will never require any batteries. The leaves will wiggle and sway with an organic happiness when it's in the light. Flip Flap can sometimes be found flapping around The Nursery

Footnotes Bear - The Footnotes Bear by Russ is a very cuddly bear that has speakers for shoes so you can listen to your favourite tunes through it. You can understand the logic, it literally has 'notes' from its feet. It is avaliable in pink and blue and is perfect for your iPod or MP3 player. With their little jeans and pocket for your music player, they are the coolest bear speakers around. The only thing that could possibly be cooler is a pair of human sized speaker shoes. The footnotes bear can sometimes be found in the Exotic Pets section... You can't miss it, it looks like a jungle

Furby Island - Furby island is the home of the new emoto-tronic Furby. It is also a film which was released in

FurReal - The FurReal toys are a number of highly realistic electronic animals that respond to various interactions and are very lifelike. "If it isn't FurReal, it isn't For Real." - Unless it is real, which everything is except toys... like the FurReal pets...anyway Although usually associated with girls, this brand is a purrfect present for any animal lover and (contrary to popular belief) doesn't use any real fur. Also, it is often miswritten as Fur-Real, or 'Fur Real.' To read more about the FurReal range, please see below.

FurReal Cat - If you want a cat but are generally scared of cats or are allergic to cat fur then this FurReal cat is for you. It doesn't actually walk along but responds to your touch and can sense when you are in front of it. FurReal Cat is very realistic and will make sounds like a real cat as well as getting angry when you step on its tail. Another positive note about this cat is that it won't leave you any little surprises under the table and then look ashamed. Its long white fur is beautiful and the FurReal cat comes with its own comb so you can make sure it is purrfect. Take a look for the FurReal White Cat in the Cat Corner.

FurReal Cuddle Chimp - The FurReal Cuddle Chimp is the happiest and cutest Chimp you will ever see. If you're not a massive fan of the FurReal range as it strikes you as a little girly, then forget this is a FurReal pet and instead think of it as a real chimp. The Cuddle Chimp is so cute that you won't be able to resist hugging it when it puts its arms up. If you leave it alone it will call out for you and sigh if it gets a little depressed. This chimp is everything you could hope for with a real chimp but isn't illegal to keep and won't be able to beat you at chess. The chimp loves to be tickled and stroked but its favourite past time is cuddling. When the chimp has had enough of cuddling, it will beg for its bottle or fall asleep. Just like a baby. The Cuddle Chimp sucks from its bottle and sometimes gets the hiccups. The Cuddle Chimp can be found in the Exotic Pets section of the Electronic Pet Shop.

Furbish - This is the term for the special language spoken by the Furbys. When you first get a Furby, they will speak mainly Furbish and be quite difficult to understand, but as your Furby develops, they will speak more English and less Furbish. When fully developed, Furbys will speak roughly 80% English and 20% Furbish. Some Furbys sold in non-English-speaking countries don't speak English at all - there are Spanish-speaking, Japanese-Speaking, German-speaking, French-speaking and Italian-speaking Furbys to be found! For a full list of all Furbish words, check out the downloadable Furby Dictionary on the Furby Info page

G

Girly - A phrase usually affiliated with girls but sometimes with boys as well. The girly colour pink is usually thought of as a girl's colour, however if football players used a pink football, with pink clothing and pink wigs this would change.... and so would football. An affectionate term meaning pretty or pinkish.

Green Fingers - Usually associated with someone who has a love of plants and especially likes growing them. However, I would like to alert your attention to a more sinister meaning. What if someones fingers are actually green? Does this mean they are an alien? If they are, this could mean the end of the human race or worse - the world! -Alternatively, they could have just been finger painting.

Little Surprises - This is a phrase that means poo or a smaller dead animal. It's meant to be a cute way of saying that your cat has had an accident and that it is a nice little surprise for you. It's not nice though, because it gets your hopes up and makes you think your cat has bought you something, but it hasn't.. its just messed up your best rug or bought a mouse in. None of the pets at the Electronic Pet Shop will mess up your carpet or bring in creatures from the outside. It's pets without the poop.

M

Mode - In terms of Electronic Pets the term mode refers to the setting in which you are playing with your pet. Sometimes the mode of a toy can be changed by physically switching a button such as 'test me mode.' Other times the pet can be told to change mode, an example of this is Emoto-tronic Furby which has many modes including; game, joke, dance and sing. To access these modes the user asks Furby to do one of the things and then the Furby can be intereracted with in that mode. The most commonly known toy with modes is Tamagotchi which have a different number of modes where you can feed your pet, look up statistics, play games with your pet etc.

Mono - The word mono is a term used to refer to speaker quality. Mono is short for Monaural which means a single channel of audio. Although there may be two speakers attached to the device, with mono sound there will only be one sound coming out of both speakers at one time. Mono is usually used as opposed to stereo.

Original Furby - The Original Furby was produced between 1998 and 2000 by Tiger Electronics. There were around 60 different types of Furby to collect. The original Furby had five sensors for movement, light, feeding and general patting. The original Furby was said to have more personality than the new Emoto-tronic Furby which was produced in 2005 by Hasbro. Unlike the new Furbys, the original Furby could talk to other Furbys and had their own name. The original Furby can be adopted from AdoptaFurby.com with its own personalised adoption package. Quantum Physics - It was once said that "if you think you understand quantum physics, you don't understand it," which in theory, means that if you don't think you understand quantam physics... you do. The possibility that there are multiple dimensions now makes perfect sense to me. Somewhere out there electronic pets are feeding us fake food with a plastic spoon. And somewhere out there, I found a more related example to fill the q section.

The Rocobo shows emotion and if it needs to be fed through it's facial screen, but unlike a tamagotchi, Rocobo can move and is shaped like a dog. Made by Tomy Takara, this little pooch is very difficult to get hold of as it has to be imported from Japan. Search for Rocobo in the Dog Pound.

I don't really know what Sean is but he needs his batteries replacing all the time and doesn't seem to do very much. This definition is a dedication to them.

Tamagotchi - The Tamagotchi was originally a handheld digital pet created in 1996 by Aki Maila, sold by Bandai. Because of its success, it is now the name commonly given to all Electronic Pets in the same style. The original Tamagotchi was housed in a small egg-shaped plastic body which was around 5cm long. Tamagotchis, or what we now refer to as tamagotchis, now can come in a range of different shapes and sizes. Usually the Tamagotchi has three buttons: A, B, C, which allow the user to communicate and 'play' with their pet in a number of ways. These usually include: cleaning up a Tamagotchi's waste, checking its age, weight, hunger, happiness and other stat levels, feeding the Tamagotchi snacks or food and playing a range of games with the pet. The word Tamagotchi combines the word 'tamgo,' which means 'egg' in japanese, and the english word 'watch.' After importing the 'Tamagotch' to the western world, the name was then changed to Tamagotchi, for ease of use. The Electronic Pet Shop does not have a specific area where you can adopt Tamagotchis, however take a look at the little dog, Rocobo, which is very similar to a Tamagotchi, imported from Japan and can be sometimes found in the Dog Pound.
